One field, ordered by position. Beat someone above you and the two of you swap places, however far above they are: you take their number, they take yours, and nobody in between moves. Beat someone 10 places above you and you climb 10 rungs in one match, while they drop 10. Beating someone below you changes nothing — that is the point of the order.

The usual reach is 5 places above you, which is a convention rather than a rule: nothing stops you playing someone further up if you both agree. A result counts for the ladder the same way however far apart you were — positions move provisionally when the score is posted. Corrections and disputes recalculate the affected results.

The ladder started as a one-time snapshot, highest skill rating on top, and a player who joined afterward starts at the bottom regardless of their rating — same as joining a ladder in person mid-season. From there, the order only ever changes when a reported win swaps the two players involved. So somebody can sit above a higher-rated player simply because they were seeded there first and haven't lost a challenge since, and a strong player who joined late has to win their way up rather than starting near the top. A match with no winner (cancelled, or one that ran out of time) never moves anyone.
